Cat Haikus

Friday, October 8, 2004

Uniquely Japanese, haiku as a form of poetry seems uniquely suited to felines - I could almost imagine them being our cat’s preferred form of communication!

I received the following in an email. I believe they were collected various places off the Internet. Sorry there is no attribution.

The food in my bowl
Is old, and more to the point
Contains no tuna.
----
So you want to play.
Will I claw at dancing string?
Your ankle’s closer.
----
There’s no dignity
In being sick - which is why
I don’t tell you where.
----
Seeking solitude
I am locked in the closet.
For once I need you.
----
Tiny can, dumped in
Plastic bowl. Presentation,
One star; service: none.
----
Am I in your way?
You seem to have it backwards:
This pillow’s taken.
----
Your mouth is moving;
Up and down, emitting noise.
I’ve lost interest.
----
The dog wags his tail,
Seeking approval. See mine?
Different message.
----
My brain: walnut-sized.
Yours: largest among primates.
Yet, who leaves for work?
----
Most problems can be
Ignored. The more difficult
Ones can be slept through.
----
My affection is conditional.
Don’t stand up,
It’s your lap I love.
----
Cats can’t steal the breath
Of children. But if my tail’s
Pulled again, I’ll learn.
----
I don’t mind being
Teased, any more than you mind
A skin graft or two.
----
So you call this thing
Your “cat carrier.” I call
These my “blades of death.”
----
Toy mice, dancing yarn
Meowing sounds. I’m convinced:
You’re an idiot.

I dog-sat Maggie on Saturday for my mom, who was in Toronto over the weekend. Admittedly, Vespa did more watching than I did: Here?s a couple pictures of her hunting Maggie?s leash. That?s right, the leash, not the dog.

Maggie, of course, is too blind to see the cats anymore, so I’m not sure what she thought of the leash which seemed to constantly change length!

More Kitten Cuteness

It’s been a while since I posted pictures of Bernstein & Petzl. We don’t have them for much longer, so get your dose of kitten cuteness while you can!

Okay, I admit it: I’m absolutely kitten crazy this morning. Their cuteness is so addicting! I can’t keep the camera away…

Nap Time

Nap time for Bernstein | Canon 10D, 28-105mm

The kittens are now four weeks old and cute as can be. It’s amazing how fast they grow! (Remember when they looked like baby rats?) Jet moved them from their original box, which was getting a little crowded, to the large cat carrier.

The little girl spends most waking moments tentatively exploring the room and chattering like a bird. (It’s an amazing noise, not at all like Vespa’s trill, if you’ve heard that.) No name for her yet though. Got any suggestions?

Then there’s Bernstein. I was a little worried about him until last night. A full week after the calico began exploring the room, he still showed no interest in leaving the box. He would just sit in there and stare at the back wall. If we picked him up, he’d start screaming. Just when I started to think that maybe he couldn’t see very well or had a mental screw loose, he took a bold leap out of the box. He’s much less steady on his feet than his sister, but I’m sure with practice, that will improve.
