Olympics at Sunset

Pandora

Rarely does the Internet wow me, but today my brother Brian turned me on to one of the coolest sites on the Internet...ever. It’s a music site called Pandora

The premise is simple: Enter a band or a song that you like and the site will search “The Music Genome Project” for songs with similar musical qualities. Then, like a radio, it plays the songs. Each time a song plays you have the option to offer your opinion: “I really like this song - play more like it!” or “I don’t like this song - it’s not what this station should play.”

You can also ask why the song is playing and you’ll receive a short explanation of the song’s musical genome.

As an experiment, I typed in Reckless Kelly. The site played “A Lot To Ask” from their album “Wicked Twisted Road,” and asked if that was what I was looking for. After receiving an affirmative response, the site proceeded to play a succession of songs that have “major country influences, mixed electric and accoustic instrumentation, a vocal-centric aesthetic, extensive vamping, and major key tonality.”

John Fogerty, Davis Coen, Lucero, Jimmy Wayne, Drive-By Truckers, Billy Dean...Whoa!

As all this wasn’t cool enough, you can create multiple “stations.” And each station can have several types of music added to it for variety. Here’s a rock station I put together; check it out (esp. if your name is Nick Brown and you like “electric rock instrumentation, a subtle use of vocal harmony, mild rhythmic syncopation, mixed acoustic and electric instrumentation and major key tonalities").
